FAQ's
Here are some of the answers to our frequently asked questions (FAQ's). If you are left with any further questions after perusing this page, please feel free to reach out to us via our Contact page
Will my treatment be covered by Medical Aid?
Fortunately, all medical screenings are covered in full by most medical aids, and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is also covered by most medical aids, partially or fully, provided that an appropriate psychiatrist motivation is given.
Intravenous infusions are also partially covered by most medical aids, particularly in cases when an appropriate motivation is provided by a psychiatrist or psychologist.
Psychiatrist consults are covered in full by most medical aids and psychotherapy sessions are partially covered by most medical aids.

NOTE: If you are uncertain about your coverage, please verify with your medical aid provider.
Psychiatry Consultations
Our psychiatry consultations are conducted by experienced professionals who provide comprehensive assessments, diagnoses, and treatment plans tailored to each individual's needs.
Psychotherapy Sessions
Our psychotherapy sessions offer a safe and supportive environment for clients to explore their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Our skilled therapists draw on evidence-based techniques to help individuals address various mental health challenges, promoting self-awareness, growth, and healing. We offer therapy for adult individuals and couples.
Intravenous Infusions with Optional Therapy
Our science-based intravenous infusion program is designed to facilitate deep introspection and healing with the controlled use of a safe, legal medicine traditionally used in anaesthesia, in line with SASA and SASOP Guidelines. This approach can be beneficial for individuals seeking support for treatment-resistant mental health conditions in a therapeutic setting, following a comprehensive safety screening to ensure suitability for each individual candidate.
1. WHAT MOLECULES ARE USED FOR INTRAVENOUS INFUSIONS?
The dissociative anaesthetic molecule used in our intravenous infusions has a “mind manifesting” effect. This molecule serves to promote emotional healing and growth by catalysing intense self-reflection and allow for new perspectives to be adopted through transcendent experiences.
2. WHY USE INTRAVENOUS INFUSIONS FOR DEPRESSION?

In the year 2000, scientists at Yale University began exploring the potential of some molecules for helping people with treatment resistant depression. They discovered that by administering sub-anaesthetic doses of certain molecules, depressive symptoms were rapidly and significantly reduced. Unlike traditional antidepressants which may take weeks to be effective and have a host of unwanted side effects, the benefits of these infusions may be felt within 2 hours. These benefits may be sustained with the help of psychotherapy. The intravenous infusion of this molecule as a treatment method has been described as ‘the biggest breakthrough in depression research in 50 years.’

This is because it is:
Fast-acting: It takes effect within minutes and a single infusion lasts less than an hour.
Generally Safe: It has few risks and side effects. Syntonic's careful medical and psychological screenings ensure safety.
Effective: The positive effects are rapid and robust.
Legal: This medicine is approved for use in South Africa and globally. Syntonic operates only within the boundaries of the South African law and according to SASA and SASOP Guidelines
3. HOW DO INTRAVENOUS INFUSIONS TREAT TREATMENT-RESISTANT DEPRESSION & OTHER CONDITIONS?

In conditions such as depression, anxiety, substance use, PTSD and OCD, neural pathways in the brain become rigid and fixed, resulting in low mood, excessive and repetitive worry, rumination and unhealthy habits. By placing your brain into a state that may be likened to a wakeful dream, this dissociative anaesthetic allows different brain regions to activate, connect and communicate. In this state, we experience fundamental shifts in our perceptions of ourselves and reality, allowing us to process trauma and loss, resolve inner conflict, release suppressed emotion, gain self-insight and transform core beliefs and behaviours that may no longer serve us.
4. HOW DO YOU ADMINISTER THE INFUSIONS?

Our qualified medical doctors administer it intravenously (via a drip) in the arm. This allows us to carefully control dosage, onset and offset of action, as well as potential side effects. Our beautifully designed, private infusion room provides the perfect setting for a safe and meaningful psychedelic journey. You are carefully monitored throughout your experience by our clinical team.
5. WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN INFUSION AND HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
You are welcomed into a private booth and seated comfortably in a recliner. An IV is inserted into your arm. Eye shades are placed over your eyes and noise canceling headphones over your ears. Your phone is placed on flight mode and your headphones are connected to our carefully curated Spotify music playlist. Our dedicated doctors administer the medication and you are invited to relax and enjoy the journey.
The infusion lasts for between 40-60 minutes.
6. HOW DO I MAKE THE BENEFITS LAST LONGER?
The benefits of the treatment are deepened and sustained by thorough preparation and integration therapy. Coupling these therapies with the mindfulness-based practices, such as yoga, breathwork, meditation and deliberate cold exposure is the best way to continuously enjoy the positive changes initiated by your infusions. Our expert clinicians will design a tailor-made program for you based on your intentions and goals.
7. WHO IS AN UNSUITABLE CANDIDATE FOR SYNTONIC'S INTRAVENOUS INFUSION THERAPY PROGRAM?
Despite its good safety profile, this may not be suitable for some, including people with a history of psychosis or those currently struggling with manic episodes. Certain medical conditions may also be contraindicated with this treatment, such as uncontrolled hypertension, a history of brain haemorrhage or aneurism, recent heart attack or stroke and heart arrhythmia. Our clinical team conducts thorough medical and psychological screenings to ensure you are a safe candidate for this treatment option
8. WHAT DOES AN INFUSION FEEL LIKE?

Although your mindset going into an infusion is key in determining the nature of the experience, many people describe a sense of awe and sacredness, transcendence of space and time, profound peace and ineffability (indescribable wonder). Physically, you may experience tingling sensations and slightly elevated heart rate. ‘Out of body’ experiences have also been reported at higher doses.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
1. WHAT IS TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION (TMS)?
TMS is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that uses a rapidly changing magnetic field to induce weak electric currents in specific brain regions, and has been shown to treat treatment-resistant depression effectively, particularly when paired with psychotherapy.

2. HOW DOES TMS WORK?
-
A specialised magnetic coil is placed on the scalp near the targeted brain area.
-
The coil emits brief, focused magnetic pulses that pass harmlessly through the skull.
-
These pulses stimulate nerve cells in the targeted brain region, influencing their activity.
3. HOW LONG DOES A TMS SESSION LAST?
-
A typical TMS session lasts around 20-40 minutes.
-
The actual treatment time is shorter, followed by setup and patient assessment.
4. WHAT DOES TMS FEEL LIKE?
-
Some people may experience a gentle tapping sensation on their scalp during the procedure.

5. WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS OF TMS?
-
Common - Mild headache, scalp discomfort, and temporary muscle twitching in the face or jaw.
-
Rare - Dizziness, lightheadedness, or seizure (very rare); thus the importance of screening prior to receiving the treatment.
